Race Notes
  • The 2022 Big Machine Music City Grand Prix was 80 laps on the 11-turn, 2.1-mile street circuit totaling 168 miles. The race would have become a timed race of two hours if there were wet conditions. The pit road speed was 40 mph and the pit window was approximately 26–28 laps under green-flag conditions, but cars could have pitted as early as Lap 10 due to strategy. Pole sitter Scott McLaughlin gridded drivers’ left and the green flag to start the race was waved the fourth time past the start-line flag stand between Turns 8 and 9. All restarts occurred in the same location.
  • All cars but those of Josef Newgarden, Will Power, Graham Rahal, Rinus VeeKay, Jack Harvey, Scott Dixon, Felix Rosenqvist, Marcus Ericsson and Takuma Sato started the race on Firestone Firehawk green-sidewalled guayule alternate tires. Each car was required to use one set of new alternate green tires and one set of primary black tires during the race.
  • Due to a delay for inclement weather near the temporary street circuit around Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee, pre-race activities began around 3:45 p.m. CDT. At 3:55 p.m., the ambient temperature was 78 degrees with 84% relative humidity and overcast skies. The track temperature was 91 degrees according to Firestone engineers.
  • At 4:05 p.m., Big Machine recording artist Brantley Gilbert, the race’s grand marshal, gave the command: "Long live fast cars and country music. Drivers, start your engines." All cars started and were rolling on the grid.
  • Pole sitter McLaughlin led the field past the finish line where the lap count and race clock started. At the start line, the green flag waved with the 26 Indy cars racing over the Korean Veterans Memorial Bridge and into Turn 9. At the conclusion of the first lap, McLaughlin led Romain Grosjean by 0.7721 of a second.
  • The start was under review by Race Control who judged the No. 8 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda of Ericsson to have jumped the start. Ericsson was ordered to give up track position pursuant to Rule 7.6.5.
  • On Lap 3, the No. 26 Honda of Colton Herta made contact with the Turn 4 tire barrier after initial contact with the No. 4 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet of Dalton Kellett. Herta continued with damage but the incident did not bring out a full-course caution.
  • The race’s first yellow flag flew on Lap 9 when the No. 27 Honda of Alexander Rossi stopped on course in Turn 10. The leaders under the first three-lap caution were McLaughlin, Grosjean, Alex Palou, Christian Lundgaard and Pato O’Ward.
  • The Lap 11 restart led to a period of relative calm before the race’s second full-course caution began on Lap 22, leading to a near-continuous string of yellow flags bringing the race’s total to eight.
    • Lap 22: The No. 06 Meyer Shank Racing Honda of Helio Castroneves spun in Turn 3 and was stopped on course. Leaders at the start of the caution were McLaughlin, Grosjean, Lundgaard, Newgarden and O’Ward.
    • Lap 26: Multiple cars, including the No. 15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda of Graham Rahal and the No. 5 Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet of Pato O'Ward, were stopped on course. For taking emergency service in a closed pit, both Scott Dixon and Helio Castroneves were forced to restart from the back of the field following the seven-lap caution.
    • Lap 34: The No. 51 Dale Coyne Racing with RWR Honda of Takuma Sato and the No. 29 Andretti Autosport Honda of Devlin DeFrancesco made contact with the barrier in Turn 10. Leaders at the start of this seven-lap caution were Palou, Simon Pagenaud, David Malukas, McLaughlin and Kyle Kirkwood.
    • Lap 52: The No. 15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda of Graham Rahal and the No. 21 Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet of Rinus VeeKay made contact with the tire barrier in Turn 4. Newgarden took the lead under caution and led the restart on Lap 56.
    • Lap 64: The No. 18 Dale Coyne Racing with HMD Honda of Malukas and the No. 14 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet of Kirkwood made contact with the barrier in Turn 9. Dixon assumed the race lead under caution and led the field back to green on Lap 70.
    • Lap 73: The No. 48 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda of Jimmie Johnson made contact with the wall in Turn 4. Leaders at the start of the three-lap caution were Dixon, Lundgaard, McLaughlin, Palou and Grosjean.
    • Lap 76: On the restart, contact between Newgarden and Grosjean resulted in contact with the barrier in Turn 9 for the No. 28 Andretti Autosport Honda. The three-lap caution period included a red flag totaling 11 minutes and 54 seconds.
  • Dixon led the field to the start line on Lap 78 and maintained the lead until the checkered flag, taking the white flag with a 0.3613-second advantage over McLaughlin and ended the race with a 0.1067-second margin of victory.
  • The effort marked Dixon's 53rd career Indy car victory, ranking him second on the all-time win list and breaking a tie with Mario Andretti. The win put the six-time champion within six points of championship leader Power.

Qualifying Notes
  • Qualifying for the NTT P1 Award consists of three segments. In the first round, each group receives 10 minutes of track time. The fastest six cars from each group advance to Round 2 while the remaining cars are assigned positions 13 to 26. Group 1 drivers will occupy the odd-numbered positions while Group 2 drivers will occupy the even-numbered positions based on their fastest lap times. During Round 2, the 12 advancing cars receive 10 minutes of track time with the fastest six advancing to the Firestone Fast Six while the remaining cars are ranked in positions seven through 12 based on their fastest laps. During the Firestone Fast Six, the six cars receive six minutes of guaranteed green-flag time. At the end of session, cars are ranked one through six based on their fastest laps.
  • Originally scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. CDT, the start of qualifying in Nashville was delayed 90 minutes do to inclement weather.
  • At 5 p.m., the ambient temperature at the Nashville street circuit was 84 degrees. The track temperature was 100 degrees according to Firestone Racing engineers.
  • Group 1, featuring the first race cars on track after rain fell in the vicinity of Nissan Stadium, was punctuated by two red flags:
    • Three minutes into the 10-minute session, the No. 29 Andretti Autosport Honda of Devlin DeFrancesco stopped on course in Turn 4. The incident caused DeFrancesco to be stripped of his two fastest laps and the ability to advance.
    • One minute before the end of Group 1 qualifying, the No. 26 Andretti Autosport Honda of Colton Herta made contact with the barrier in Turn 4, preventing drivers including Alexander Rossi and Simon Pagenaud from turning laps at speed. Herta was penalized his two fastest laps and the ability to advance.
  • Group 2 and Round 2 were both without serious incident, although a Round 2 penalty levied against Will Power — who caused a local yellow that impeded another competitor — dropped him out of the top six and out of contention for pole.
  • Alex Palou, Scott McLaughlin, Romain Grosjean, Christian Lundgaard, Josef Newgarden and Pato O'Ward competed in the Firestone Fast Six for the NTT P1 Award.
  • McLaughlin ended the final round of qualifying with the fastest lap: 1:14.5555. The effort represented his second career NTT IndyCar Series pole.
